About GIEMS

Who We Are

The Global Institute for Energy, Minerals, and Society (GIEMS) was established in 2025 as an equal partnership between the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic. As a non-profit research and development institute, GIEMS is mandated to act as a catalyst for expanding the capacity and impact of research, innovation, and training programs that advance the energy transition in Saskatchewan and beyond.

Our History

GIEMS was first conceived at COP28 in Dubai in December 2023, born from a shared recognition of the urgent need to accelerate the development, research, and training required to enable the global energy transition. Building on this vision, GIEMS was formally established in 2025 as a non-profit research and development institute. With equal ownership by the University of Regina, the University of Saskatchewan, and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, GIEMS reflects a collaborative commitment to advancing innovation, education, and partnership for a more sustainable energy future.

Our Purpose

We act as the central hub for collaboration. Rather than duplicating services, we leverage and coordinate the expertise of our partners and stakeholders to:

  • Expand the capacity and impact of research and training.

  • Align institutional efforts with provincial, national, and global priorities.

  • Contribute to the Saskatchewan Growth Plan by ensuring Saskatchewan plays a leadership role in advancing minerals and energy solutions for the world.

Our Role

  • Project Management: Coordinating large-scale funding applications

  • Portfolio Management: Supporting research chair programs and ensuring activities are coordinated across institutions.

  • Collaboration Hub: Reducing competition, increasing cooperation, and ensuring practical, problem-solving outcomes.
